Ladies night every night
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada realized hat the State of Nevada is one of the few states without a law that would protect customers from sex discrimination, such as gay and transgender, by business.
Some years ago, a few states used a law to stamp disparate pricing for men and women at bars or nightclubs. Lawsuits “Ladies’ night” have succeeded most of the time.
Well to let women in for free or at least with a discount, it’s a marketing strategy for many casino nightclubs in Nevada. Women kind of are an eye candy and men the wallet, because if many women are in a club, men usually buy them a lot of drinks. This is a kind of sexual stereotype and the women are often used to attract men. In many clubs go-go dancers are present.
Las Vegas civil rights lawyer Todd Phillips moved to Las Vegas from Hollywood a few years ago. He made a business out of the fact that in California many clubs charged men more than they charged women.
Last year Phillips was the first one who challenged a business for gender discrimination under Nevada’s “public accommodation” law.
There’s a federal law that prohibits businesses which discriminate someone on the basis of race, colour, national origin or religion. In 1970 the States added also the gender, but the State of Nevada never did.
Some of the lawyers in Nevada say that sexual discrimination is bad, but not illegal.
In California for such discrimination, you pay a penalty of $ 4, 000.
Phillips is convinced that gender-based discrimination is as unacceptable as racially-based pricing.
Customers shouldn’t be treated differently.
